Week 7: Congo Tetra

Fish of the Week

This week's Fish of the Week is the Congo Tetra. These peaceful shoaling fish grow to around 8cm in length and originate from the Congo River and other central African rivers. Congo Tetras thrive best in groups of at least 6 or more and should only be considered for aquariums of 100 litres plus.

Congo Tetras favour slightly acidic water conditions with a pH of around 6 to 6.5 and prefer a water temperature between 24°C and 27°C. These fish can be kept with most other community fish but can be hyperactive and nip the fins of slower moving tank mates, so bear this in mind.

When mature, the Congo Tetra has a wonderful metallic sheen to its colour and will add life to any aquarium. Being omnivorous, the Congo Tetra will readily eat most live, frozen and flake foods.
